Activity 1
Age Appropriate Cognitive Development
Matches Objects That Are Hot Or Cold Using Sense Of Touch
I am getting sharper with my sense of touch! Place four identical glasses on the table (two with warm water and two with cold water). Observe if I am able to match the two glasses with warm water to each other and the other two with cold water to each other. I usually develop this ability when I am between 40 and 43 months old (3 year 4 months and 3 year 7 months). |
Steps
-
Place four identical glasses on the table (two with warm water and two with cold water).
-
Observe if your child is able to match the two glasses with warm water to each other and the other two with cold water to each other.
Feedback
Your child is developing good touch discrimination skills in this activity. The touch discriminatory skills for temperature is important to help protect your child from danger! This will be a good time to educate him on the things that are too hot and hence, dangerous to touch or go near. You may look at the suggested activities for more ideas with this task.
|
-
Provide lots of opportunities for your child to explore the environment using his sense of touch. This will help sharpen his touch discrimination skills.
-
You may challenge your child further by having him differentiate between identical glasses with only slightly different temperatures.
-
Encourage your child to explore using his hands. You may create a 'feeling' bag for him to put his hands inside and feel objects with different textures such as sand paper, fabric, a key, a toothbrush etc.
-
Discuss the concepts of 'hot' and 'cold' with your child whenever there is an opportunity. For example, when a bowl of hot soup is served, discuss about its temperature and contrast that with the ice cold ice cream.

Activity 2
Age Appropriate Speech, Language And Communication Development
Uses 3 - Word Noun Phrase
A noun phrase can include an article, an adjective and a noun. Therefore, I may say something like “a big bed”. I will still be making grammatical mistakes from time to time. The good news is, you will hear less and less of them as I mature. Right now, I should be able to use 3-word noun phrases! I usually develop this ability when I am between 36 and 42 months (3 years and 3 year 6 months). |
Steps
Feedback
A child usually develops the ability to use a 3-word noun phrase between 36 and 42 months. You can further encourage and expand your child's vocabulary by exposing him to different objects, people and situations. You may look at the suggested activities for more ideas.

-
Use pairs of pictures to describe objects and concepts such as weather. For example, one picture contains a blue sky with the sun shining and the other shows dark clouds and rain. Which is nice weather and which is gloomy weather?
-
Use sounds such as the quiet whirring of a fridge and compare to the loudness of a stereo system.
-
When going for a walk, point out people with different expressions on their faces to show emotions. For example, “That boy is smiling. He is happy.”
-
Usually, it is particularly effective to teach this in terms of what they want. For instance, you can get them to request at snack time whether it is hot or cold milk that they want.
