It is always a thrill to name your baby. Do you name your little darling after your favourite uncle, that opera singer you have always admired or that memorable place where you had your honeymoon? Depending on the culture and language it originates from, a name usually means something. Sometimes it may even be a derivation of another name. For example, the name ‘Joan’ means ‘God is gracious’. It is the female version of the male name ‘John’ and has several variations such as Joanie, Jon and Jonee. ‘Joan’ is also the name of a historical figure known as ‘Joan of Arc’ so this is one name with a lot of history behind it.  

You may have also wondered in your youth why so many of your friends share the same name. Like fashions that come and go, names also follow trends that reflect the current times. What was popular during the 1930s would be considered old-fashioned nowadays.

People also pick names for their positive associations. A certain name may gain favour because of celebrities who have been good role models or someone they want their child to be like.
